“Atonement” Comes to the Screen: Good, Not Great

    By Kyle | November 20, 2007

Over at The Horizon, I offer a thought on the Keira Knightley-James McAvoy film of “Atonement.”

Another thought: the film has many of the things you’d expect in a Best Picture nominee–lush decor, temporal sprawl, nuanced acting, a great love story and great sorrow–but for me it didn’t quite uncork the emotions the way you’d expect a Best Picture winner to do. I don’t think “No Country for Old Men” quite did that either, although it came closer. I expect that neither film will win Best Picture–unless nothing stronger comes along in December. Still to come, on my schedule at least, are “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “Sweeney Todd” and “There Will Be Blood.” I expect at least one of those will also get a Best Picture nomination based on what I’ve heard.
