“Green Zone” a $230 Million Bomb: Time Magazine

    By kyle | March 16, 2010

Looks like “Green Zone” is “a bit of a disaster,” says Time’s amiable Richard Corliss. “A smidge of a calamity.” (Link courtesy of John Nolte at Big Hollywood, which ought to be your go-to site for all things “Green Zone.”) The movie cost, all told, some $230 million and looks like it could lose well over $100 million, making it one of the most epic flops of all time. Universal was already reeling from a long string of flops and disappointments. I wonder if anyone at the studio is about to get fired. I also wonder to what degree Working Title, one of my favorite production companies, is on the hook. I hope they’re not financially imperilled as I greatly enjoy their Brit romcoms.

GE owns 80 percent of Universal.

They make lousy air conditioners as well.

Of course it bombed. The American public wants to continue pretending that the moral aberration of the Iraq war never happened.. but no matter how hard we shut our eyes the fact is that thousands of american soldiers, and hundred of thousands of innocent iraqi citizens died because of the lies, torture, and delusion of one sorry US Administration, and the cowardice and cheap and fake “patriotism” of most of its citizens, its congress, and its media (with very few exceptions).

The opposite. We want the dumbbell filmakers to stop pretending it was a moral aberration. (And the dumbbell blog commenters.)

Americans are quite willing to reconsider that mistakes were made in the run up and the prosecution of the war. The rules of engagement are a dangerous outrage. If you say the war was ill-considered and not wise for America, that can be discussed. If you say that continuing it is criminal in both Afghanistan and Iraq, I’d even agree. We don’t care about Iraqis yearning to breathe free nor should we. I’d leave the debacle that is McChstyal’s reenactment of Westmoreland in Vietnam to our host’s colleague, Ralph Peters.

But if you want to take the leap that those were willful intentional lies, the American public is not taking that leap with you. I think McChrystal and Petreus are dangerously misguided, but they feverently(if wrongly) believe they are doing God’s work.

And the evidence doesn’t support it either. The Clinton Administration and Congress all believed Saddam Hussein had WMDs, as did Syrian, Iranian and Saudi intelligence, the Mossad, MI5 and the KGB.And evil Bush fought this war for Halliburton and Big Oil, those interests haven’t benefited in any way. If Bush was duped he wasn’t the only one.

Even leaving aside the politics, this is very heartening news. There is a special place in hell for filmmakers like Greengrass who overuse cinema verite techniques. And every time a jiggly-camera movie bombs, an angel gets his wings. Stop the excessive jiggling! It’s self-consciously arty and insulting to the audience.

Well Kyle, it looks like the only positive effect Green Zone has had is increase your blog traffic. Or at least the amount of comments.

I watched the first few minutes of this travesty – who could find any WMD with the camera shaking so badly?

It bombed because it’s a bad movie. It has nothing to do with Americans being ready or not for the truth. I’m glad it bombed. I’m so sick of Matt Damon action type movies. He sucks in that capacity.

It’s a very good, moving, well made, but not great movie. It has a certain style, particularly of camera, focus, editing, and resolution that some, especially if their eye/mind wiring is of the sort that cannot register such motion, will find unacceptable. (just as some are bothered by flourescent tube lights, while others are not.) That it tells A truth to power that is uncomfortable to the adamantly ignorant, neocon, or those patriotic in a foolishly blind and destructive way, is also fact. Valley of Elah was also very good on a different but also true perspective. Syriana was a very good movie. Those of no conscience, no consciousness, no respect, no real information, might not like them. Those already too pained by the realities, also might not like them.

To all of the ” you pathetic, ignorant, neocon, pseudo-patriotic, blind” etc, etc, etc, I have but one small request: Prove it. Please prove that both wars were waged based solely on some crazy, evil white man’s delusions. Come on, that should be easy!! JUST PROVE IT!!! But, alas, you cannot. You never will because there is no proof that there was no threat. The entire world was fooled during that time. Were mistakes made? Yes, it happens to the best of us. But please stop insisting all of this supposed EVIL happened because of a) ONE MAN and b)ONE MAN who was so eeeeeeevil and delusional and eeeeeevil.
