Who I’m Voting for in the New York Film Critics Circle Awards

    By Kyle | December 13, 2009

As the Circle prepares to meet tomorrow morning in our secret tomblike structure somewhere in the molten vicinity of the earth’s core*, I advise that I will be unable to reveal anything about the clandestine methods of this ring of stalwarts. Here’s who I hope wins; sometimes you can’t vote for your top choice (you may wind up voting for your tenth choice) if no one else supports it, so in parentheses I’ll name alternatives I wouldn’t mind voting for if my no. 1 pick isn’t attracting many other votes.

Best Actress: Carey Mulligan, An Education (Penelope Cruz, Broken Embraces)
Best Screenplay: Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds (Pete Docter, Bob Peterson and Tom McCarthy, Up)
Best Cinematographer: Robert Richardson, Inglourious Basterds
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds (Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones)
Best Animated Film: Up (Fantastic Mr. Fox)
Best Director: Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds (Wes Anderson, Fantastic Mr. Fox)
Best Supporting Actress: Melanie Laurent, Inglourious Basterds (Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air)
Best First Film: In the Loop (Crazy Heart)
Best Foreign Film: Shall We Kiss? (The White Ribbon, Broken Embraces)
Best Actor: Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart (Michael Stuhlbarg, A Serious Man)
Best Documentary: Of Time and the City (The Cove)
Best Picture: Inglourious Basterds (Up in the Air)

If you see someone who looks like Vincent Price at the Critic’s Circle award, I suggest you run quickly away.
