2009 Listmania! The Year’s Ten Best Villains (With Ten Bonus Evildoers At No Extra Charge)
By Kyle | December 4, 2009
Now that I’ve seen (almost) every 2009 movie I’m going to see (sorry, “Transformers 2″! Maybe I’ll squeeze you in next year) I’m going to try to post one top-ten list every day until the end of the year. First up: top screen villains of 2009. There were too many awesome baddies to boil the list down to ten, though. (Yes, a lot of the movies mentioned are among my favorites of the year. And I reserve the right to update this list based on any oversights or movies I haven’t seen yet.)
Vorsicht! Achtung! The winner is:
1. Col. Landa (Christoph Waltz), “Inglourious Basterds”
Take a bow, you nutty Nazi!
Followed by:
2. George Harvey (Stanley Tucci), “The Lovely Bones”
3. Human/German nature (entire cast), “The White Ribbon”
4. Rat (Willem Dafoe), “Fantastic Mr. Fox”
5. The poltergeist (no one), “Paranormal Activity”
6. L’il Mago (Tenoch Huerta), “Sin Nombre”
7. Ozymandias (Matthew Goode), “Watchmen”
8. Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer), “Up”
9. Other Mother (Teri Hatcher), “Coraline”
10. God (no one), “A Serious Man”
11. Clarke (Eric Bana), “Funny People”
12. The Japanese Dolphin-Fishing Industry, “The Cove”
13. Giulio Andreotti (Toni Servillo), “Il Divo”
14. Ronnie Barnhardt (Seth Rogen), “Obeserve and Report”
15. The Erotic Connoisseur (Glenn Kenny) “The Girlfriend Experience”
16. Sir Alistair (Kenneth Branagh), “Pirate Radio”
17. Jennifer (Megan Fox), “Jennifer’s Body”
18. The Camerlengo (Ewan McGregor), “Angels & Demons”
19. Ryder (John Travolta) “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3”
20. Mike Tyson (Mike Tyson), “The Hangover”

Love the inclusion of “God” in A Serious Man.
However, I have to admit before I read this I was nearly positive you would list Peter Saarsgard for “An Education”.
Perhaps the attempt of the British accent dropped him out of the Top 20.

I considered Saarsgaard, but I can’t really call him a villain (or all that interesting). I also considered Mo’Nique in “Precious,” but she was too over the top for me.

Gah! what about The girl from The Orphan! she was creepy and freaky and a brilliant villain. Also, personally, I preferred Bana’s villain in Star Trek.
