    Thanks, Wes Anderson!

    By Kyle | November 9, 2009

I greatly enjoyed Wes Anderson’s goofy imagination rampage “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” which is a nice return to form for Anderson and the kind of piece where, for once, his trademark whimsy overload serves him well. Anderson should make kids’ movies exclusively; it would cut down on the sad slouching, the posing, the suicide attempts and the generally aggravating angst that has clouded the focus of a man who is something close to a visionary. “Mr. Fox”’s The voice talent, led by George Clooney and Meryl Streep as the Foxes, is first-rate (though I wish there had been more of Bill Murray as Mr. Fox’s apoplectic lawyer, Mr. Badger). I also enjoyed the soundtrack (which, like a lot of cool soundtracks, seems to be at least partly the creation of Randall Poster). It includes The Ballad of Davy Crockett and the theme from Truffaut’s Day for Night, which also backed Anderson’s famous AmEx commercial.
The movie is probably a little too strange and delicate for small children, but I think adults and older kids (especially college-aged ones) will be thoroughly charmed. My top ten list for the year was looking a little thin but Mr. Fox looks like a solid prospect. (Others that come to mind as strong possibilities: Up, Inglourious Basterds, Watchmen, Funny People and An Education). “FMF” opens Friday. UPDATE: Just came across this what-if-Wes-Anderson-did-a-McCain-ad spot. It’s pretty funny. I didn’t hear about it last year.
