    Dreams from My Ghostwriter

    By Kyle | September 25, 2009

It’s too perfect, yet it seems to be true: Bill Ayers ghostwrote Barack Obama’s “Dreams from My Father.” A pro-Obama book by Christopher Andersen (a “glowing” portrait of a “rock-solid marriage,” said USA Today) has surprising details. I like the way a source casually reveals, of Ayers and Obama, “Everyone knew they were friends.” Of course they were. Which is why Sarah Palin’s dig about Obama’s “palling around with terrorists” — the plural, by the way, might easily refer additionally to Ayers’ terrorist wife — was entirely accurate.

What’s left to say at this point? The pre-election Obama bears not the slightest resemblance to the man in office today.

But it’s not like the MSM didn’t warn us …

I was at a lecture the other day during which an academic noted, somewhat in passing, that American presidents typically “govern from the center,” freed from the obligation to placate needy political bases. On the contrary, Obama seems to be remaining loyal to his base. Perhaps he believes he is FDR?

What’s truly amazing about Obama’s first year is that he had a picture-perfect example to follow in Bill Clinton’s presidency. Clinton entered office with both houses of congress full of Dems; he had run as a pragmatic, center-left candidate, then veered left upon taking office. The country promptly hammered him in 1994, at which point Clinton governed as he promised he would as a candidate. From 1994-2000, he enjoyed solid poll numbers.

All Obama had to do was simply observe the pattern of the Clinton presidency, recognize a center-left president can be effective in a center-right country (but not a far left president), and he could have avoided the squandering of his inaugural good will he appears to have lost. Instead, he made the exact same mistake.

And it doesn’t look likely Obama, will like Clinton, embrace his inner Eisenhower Republican. He doesn’t have one.

That may be part of it. But mainly, I don’t think he really knows how to do anything but campaign.

Wow, lots of conservative tunnel-vision on display here.

Joneeboy, I’d love it if Obama *were* remaining loyal to his bae, but I sure don’t see it. On what possible ground do you imagine he’s doing anything *other* than governing from the center? Just look at all the criticism of him from the left, and all the ways he’s perpetuated Bush-era policies.

Likewise, I can’t imagine what world J. was living in in the ’90s if he thinks Clinton ever “veered left.” Clinton was DLC through and through, triangulating from the beginning; I’ve always thought of him as the best Republican president in my lifetime.

As for the actual topic… it’s a frankly ridiculous calumny to call Ayers or Dohrn “terrorists.” Neither one ever killed anybody. They came above ground nearly 30 years ago, faced up to any and all outstanding legal issues, and set about leading very admirable lives. They’re prominent and respected in the educational, political, and philanthropic communities here in Chicago, and one can hardly move in those circles without encountering them. And they have clear and outspoken personal values and principles, and live up to them better than most people. There is nothing even remotely scandalous about knowing them.
