“Star Trek”: “Personal Human Drama Missing”
By Kyle | May 8, 2009
So says John Nolte in his Trek review. John is the first to notice that this is installment 11 of the series, which makes it an odd-numbered entry. And we all know the even-numbered ones are the good ones. The only one I really liked was “Star Trek IV”–because it took the mickey out of the whole, er, enterprise, which manages to be both portentous and campy at the same time.

Star Trek: Nemesis — an ironic title, since it appears to have pretty much brought the original timeline to an on-screen end — was the tenth film.
It wasn’t as bad as Star Trek V, but it was just terrible, a couple good ideas (mostly cribbed from Wrath of Kahn) and executed terribly.
I saw the new movie tonight and enjoyed it far more than I figured I would. This particular odd-numbered film is certainly a step up from the last even-numbered film.

You’ll NEVER convince me that Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, wasn’t the best of the bunch.
Well, maybe until now; I haven’t seen this one yet.
Anyway, NEVER!!!
KHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!

As of this morning, STAR TREK is the best reviewed movie of the year, making Kyle’s “odd-numbered” theory laughable. Trek is 84% at MetaCritic and 96% at RottenTomatoes. For comparison, last year’s “The Dark Knight” is at 82% at Meta and 94% at Tomatoes.
Of course, it’s a free country and you can always go with Kyle’s opinion, a chap who thinks the medicore Cary Grant movie “Father Goose” is a better movie than “The Philadelphia Story” “The African Queen” and “Bringing Up Baby.” Each to their own, I guess.

Enjoyable as it is, the new movie is no Wrath of Kahn, not by a long shot, and any suggestions that the movie is even in the same ballpark as The Dark Knight is simply absurd.
