Debbie Schlussel On “Last House on the Left”

    By Kyle | March 13, 2009

Conservative commentator Debbie Schlussel, who ripped “Watchmen” apart on grounds that it was too violent for kids (it’s rated R) has a completely unexpected take on the R-rated “Last House on the Left,” the sadistic, brutal, repellent (and highly effective) remake of Wes Craven’s first film. She likes praises a scene that, she says, is pro-waterboarding. Spoiler ahead! (My three-star review is up.)

I’m going to call this a head-scratcher. Someone in the movie does indeed get drowned in a sink, but that is because he poses an imminent threat to a family and has already participated in three brutal attacks including a cop killing. He is not thrust in a kitchen sink in order to get information out of him, but rather to kill him. I don’t think that is the purpose of waterboarding. I think with waterboarding you kind of assume the guy is already in custody and poses no threat. Also, the guy in the movie is a fictional character.

However, I don’t think waterboarding qualifies on torture because it fails this simple test: Is it something a journalist would volunteer to do in exchange for a story and some publicity?

I hate it when I don’t read something closely enough and post on it, and it turns out I was completely wrong. Sort of like this post by Kyle.

As for what’s her face “liking” the movie I quote from her site:

This movie left me cold . . . and angry that it will be a hit at the box office. America, you’re warped.

      FOUR MARXES PLUS

I haven’t read a single article, blog or otherwise from Schlussel that wasn’t a moral lambasting of something or other. Kid Rock sold pot, so he’s a vile drug dealer whom all ears should be spared. A parent took a kid to see Watchmen, release the hounds!

I hear the indignation, but to exactly what end, I have no clue. We can outlaw those who sell pot from buying studio equipment (so much for the music industry), outlaw children from anything over PG-13 (so much for Gettysburg or Schindler’s List) and Debbie would be happy. Or we can keep things the way they are, and she can continue doing her Coulter-without-the-humor schtick that she’s so fond of.

And some wonder why the conservative movement hit the rocks and is slowly sinking to the bottom

      And some don’t.
