    I Win Headline Derby

    By Kyle | July 17, 2008

Though my brilliant colleague Billy Heller writes most of the headlines in the Post’s Pulse section, including yesterday’s “Grinner Takes All,” I’m slightly embarrassed to admit I wrote the hed for tomorrow’s review of the supergay new musical “Mamma Mia”: ABBA-DABBA-DOO!

Seriously, this movie is a quantum leap forward in gay technology. It is to previous incarnations of gay what the Apollo space program was to the bicycle. Lou Lumenick predicts it will do $30 million this weekend, though there is a slightly more interesting movie opening against it. Is this a much gayer country than I previously suspected? Is “Mamma Mia” the gay Batman? The Flighty Knight?

Nolan may be keeping Robin in the Batman’s closet for now, but there is still plenty of gay subtext to be teased out of TDK beyond “you complete me.” Is Bruce winking when he asks Harvey, “ballet?” Adam West couldn’t have delivered the line better. And how are we kidding, Kyle, aren’t Alfred and Lucius a pair of old queens fussing over their leather-clad protege? At least “Mamma Mia!” is out and proud. Thanks for the headline.

Gay movies. Straight movies. Everything’s good. Just don’t mix the two.

Pierce Brosnan? Stellan Skarsgard? Colin Firth?

      And it’s GAY???

I think we need to have a rehash of where the line is between “gay” and just “chick flick.”

P.S., haven’t seen it, just am planning to.

If “Mamma Mia” isn’t gay, then Michael Musto is Clint Eastwood.

When a guy comes on to Eastwood’s detective in “Tightrope” and asks him why he doesn’t try it, Clint squints, pauses and casually replies, “what makes you think I haven’t?”
