    “Golf Is a Fake Sport”

    By Kyle | June 27, 2008

Who cares about golf? Really, who are you people? As sports nut Michael Lewis points out on Bloomberg, golf is not a real sport.

That guy and his article are full of shit. I’m not rich, I don’t use a cart, I golf with the family, I sweat, I don’t play hurt, and I don’t cheat on the score, but then again, I don’t cheat. I’m not concerned whether it’s a sport or not, but I do care and like, when I can get that ball straight and long towards the green. When it comes to playing golf, it’s like Kennedy once said “you either got it or your don’t”

I see it as a spectrum of sports rather than a binary either or. The more physical and demanding of strength, speed and dexterity is it… the further into the realm of “sports” it gets.

Boxing, hockey and football are hard up against one end of that spectrum while golf, bowling and darts are well to the other end. Basketball and baseball fall a fair bit closer to golf, bowling and darts than they do to boxing, hockey or football.

That doesn’t mean that baseball and basketball are “fake sports”, it would be more accurate to call them “lesser sports”.

Big fat John Daly is a golf pro, he’s an athlete?!?!

Ping pong is more sport than golf.

Golf is a sport, a great sport. If it was so easy, golf nuts like Michael Jordan or Greg Maddux would make the PGA tour, but they are unable to play at that level. One way to think of athletics is requiring great motor skills, which would seem what golf requires.

John - don’t mix up fitness with being an athlete, Daly is a good athlete, but also very undisciplined and sorely out of shape. Take a look at a few NFL offensive lineman next fall, tell me how athletic they are.

I usually like Lewis, but he missed the target with that article.

True, “Big fat” John Daly isn’t in very good shape… he looks like big fat Babe Ruth. I’d still say that the one is, and the other was, an athletes.
