I’m with you! I really enjoy Barry Manilow. His songs are just great. In college I knew some theater guys who loved Sandy Patti who also uses key changes. But, that’s what these gay guys loved about her.

I loved Manilow once upon a time, but not as a contrarian — his was top 40 material then. Who can dislike Copacabana? Not that I don’t like him now, just don’t listen much anymore.

Bravo Man, for having the kahounas to admit it. I made pretend that I really liked BM starting in ‘77 while at UB in Buffalo so that my girlfriend [a rabid fan] would like me. Years later I realized that my wife [same girl] was onto something, and I stopped teasing and started secretly listening. What is amazing is that with the help of good docs and botox, he looks like he did 30 yrs ago, exc. his face is so stretched that he can’t smile too well.

Now I can say something that won’t offend anyone: My girlfriend was a big BM fan so it gave me an excuse to listen too. Everyone has a favorite BM song or else they’re lying. I think of the scene in Tommy Boy when Farley and Spade are driving in the car when Karen Carpenter came on the radio. So we were married at Caesers’s Palace in Las Vegas and that night saw BM at the LV Hilton in 2005. It was a great night. ObB
